Day in the Life: Skoller CEO

He’s not a normal CEO, he’s a cool CEO.

The first couple years, when my partners and I were trying to get Skoller off the ground, I didn’t necessarily understand the importance of a balanced day. We did everything we had to do to stay afloat and keep the business moving forward. We were ALWAYS on call. I’m not sure it’s a bad thing (to be hyper focused when trying to get a business off the ground) but I noticed it wasn’t sustainable for me long-term. Yes, we have a seasonal business and work more hours on some weeks than others. But I am the most energized, productive and happy when I follow my routine throughout the week. Obviously things come up and detours happen, but a typical day in my life looks like this...

6:00 AM - I woke up

I wake up at 6am and start my day off at the YMCA in Brentwood. I like to exercise in the mornings and get my body moving. I’ve recently been big on getting my heartrate up first thing in the gives me much more energy and positive vibes leading into the day (much better than coffee). I try to be back at the house and showered up by 7:30, then off to work!

8:00 AM to Noon - In the trenches

From 8am to 12pm, I work with our operations teams (development team on MWF and Marketing team on TR). Our teams get together at the beginning of the week to have an R&R meeting (Recap and Roadmap). We take this time to look back on from the last 7 days and evaluate how well we executed our plan. Then, we lay out goals and responsibilities for the next 7 days. We usually go to lunch at noon.

1:00 PM to 5:00 PM - Outside partners

Following lunch, I shift my efforts to our outside partners and make sure they have everything they need (data entry team, AOII sorority, ambassadors). I also take the afternoons to connect with our current investors and stakeholders of the company as well as meet with new people interested in getting involved.

5:00 PM to 8:00 PM - Catch up with friends

I like to take the afternoons (5-8pm) either shooting pool with my buddies or playing a quick 9 at the golf course just before dinner. Sometimes I meet new friends or get together with old friends during this time as well (usually not Skoller people...I think they would quickly say that spending 8 hours a day with me is plenty of time lol).

8:00 PM to 10:00 PM - Wind down and get ready for bed

I get back to the house by 8:30pm. I check my email one last time and before flipping on an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm (Larry David is hysterical) and hang out with my awesome roommates Jeff, Logan, and Carson. This is my time to wind down and relax. I’m usually in bed by 10pm to get 8 hrs of sleep so I can bring my best for the next day!

Peace & Blessings,

Carson Ward, CEO
